I've never tried the panel mounted packs, but here's my thoughts... 1) Molle mounted hydration packs are a great idea (like the Camelbak Armorbak model). Always good to have water on you! 2) For things like MREs, spare parts, bivvy bags, etc... I'd prefer to have the ability to drop those things in a secure location or if I need to lighten up and move fast. With a panel-mounted pack, this becomes very difficult. 3) I haven't seen any panel-mounted packs with nearly the storage capacity of a standard backpack.

Hey Ruckus, are you gonna make it to the Z3 shoot & swap this weekend? Negative. Can't get any time off from work right now.

My carrier has a cool quick disconnect back panel. It allows you to be modular & have different mission specific panels just like many carriers allow for the front placard to be swapped out. (I think this design is much better then the zip-on panels CRY Precision uses). Removable Back Panel Removable Front Placard When it comes to a ruck-type loadout, you definitely want a bag you can drop & get into. When it comes to some of the options I showed above, many have pouches with spare mags accessible while wearing or tear off pouches etc... I'm still not sold on the idea but I'm certainly exploring all the options.

After this weekend at boot, I think I would like to get a PC-mounted hydration system for sure, but keep the pack as a separate thing. There were many times where I didn't need my whole pack, but had to carry it simply because it had my water. I like the idea of being able to separate the two!

The tactical tailor removable operator pack allows for both and at about $80 on Amazon is well worth it.
